Transforming Workflows with Role-Based Communication at St. Luke’s

St. Luke’s University Health Network improved care team coordination by implementing role-based messaging

Nationally recognized St. Luke’s University Health Network coordinates care between 15,000 employees in 10 hospitals and across more than 300 locations in Pennsylvania’s Greater Lehigh Valley and Western New Jersey. After experiencing rapid growth over several years, the large health network saw a need for improving care team coordination within its organization.

St. Luke’s partnered with TigerConnect to leverage modern communication tools and streamline its overall communications strategy. Through integration with the TigerConnect Clinical Collaboration platform, the health network implemented role-based communication to optimize workflows and accelerate decision-making for better patient care.

Increasing Efficiency with Role-Based Communication

A top priority for St. Luke’s was eliminating inefficient communication processes common to many large health systems, such as long operator hold periods and reliance on hallway conversations, pagers, and phone calls. St. Luke’s wanted a self-service model for role-based communication enterprise-wide.

TigerConnect provided full integration with St. Luke’s scheduling software, AMiON. The integration standardized on-call processes to make it possible for over 700 roles, clinical and non-clinical staff, to be reached instantly across departments and facilities. Role-based messaging eliminated unnecessary calls and delays through HIPAA-compliant, secure texting. Clinical end-users were now able to reach the right specialty services without knowing a specific clinician’s name or phone number.

New Opportunities for Care Team Coordination

St. Luke’s University Health Network continues to find new opportunities to enhance communication among teams, departments, and across facilities using TigerConnect. The 100% cloud-based single communication platform simplified new practice onboarding, allowing affiliated practices to deliver the best results. Likewise, staff members participating in conferences and meetings value the secure messaging and collaboration features. Add to this that providers can engage patients within the platform, and you have a recipe for an excellent clinical workflow that fosters better patient outcomes.

“There’s always opportunities to scale and leverage the platform to facilitate additional workflows. I don’t think it’s ever going to end on how we continue to leverage TigerConnect.” Matthew Fenty, Director of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, St. Luke’s University Health Network

Role-Based Workflows Designed for How Teams Communicate

The TigerConnect Clinical Collaboration platform helps healthcare teams communicate more effectively. Role-based workflows facilitate effortless collaboration, connecting medical staff to each other based on role and coverage.

With the TigerConnect Clinical Collaboration platform, workflow efficiencies are built-in.

  • Quickly locate and message on-duty staff – Directory-based lookups eliminate time wasted manually tracking down contact information, making it easy to find on-duty team members (by name or clinical role) and collaborate via text, video, or voice call.
  • Reach colleagues across shift changes – Schedule-driven role assignments automatically log users in and out of a clinical role in TigerConnect by integrating with one or more schedule systems. Reach the right person, in the right role, any time.
  • Speed up workflows with automated, role-based alerting – Instant notifications for important care updates, like lab alerts and transfer requests, are intelligently routed using real-time push notifications to the smartphones of assigned care professionals.
  • Fast-track user adoption – Quickly onboard entire teams using the platform by linking clinical roles to shift schedules. This activates staff members as they receive messages to their assigned role during shifts.
