Dec 15th, 2023 – with Russ Kino, MD, chief medical information officer and the medical director of emergency services at Providence Saint John’s Health Center
Russ Kino, MD, chief medical information officer and the medical director of emergency services at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, discusses how the organization uses TigerConnect for seamless communication during emergencies and EHR downtime. In this HIMSSCast, Dr. Kino also shares how the platform facilitates reduced length of stay and efficient, patient-centered care.
Addressing Communication Challenges in Emergency Care
In his role at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, Russ Kino, MD is hyper-focused on hospital-wide efficiency and patient throughput. In the emergency department, communication challenges faced by care teams are often and impediment to efficient care. Dr. Kino found that doctors wanted to be contacted through various communication methods which were difficult to remember for both clinical and ancillary staff. Emergency staff needed an asynchronous method of communication that was also HIPAA compliant, which lead to the adoption of the TigerConnect Clinical Collaboration Platform.
The platform streamlines communication by offering a standardized approach, overcoming the complexity of reaching out to various specialists through different methods. Dr. Kino highlights the significance of asynchronous communication, HIPAA compliance, auto-delete functionality, and integration with scheduling.
“We’re able to send images of EKGs or patients because it’s all HIPAA compliant, we have a read receipt, so we know if the recipient has seen it and if they’ve read it, we can set up groups around patient care, we have broadcast.”

Impact on Efficiency, Patient Care
Dr. Kino explains how TigerConnect contributes to efficiency and patient care by enabling quick communication and collaboration, especially in time-sensitive scenarios like strokes, heart attacks, and sepsis. The platform facilitates immediate contact with specialists, speeding up critical decision-making. Dr. Kino emphasizes the role of efficient communication in reducing length of stay, improving safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and positively impacting the hospital’s bottom line.
“We were able to cut our length of stay by about 20% from doing this. So, the impact to the hospital’s bottom line just from that alone was enormous, never mind the safety, quality, and patient satisfaction improvements that we recognized from it as well.”
