90% Healthcare Providers Still Rely on Fax Machines, Posing Privacy Risk

Despite the availability of more secure messaging platforms and other technologies, 90 percent of healthcare still relies on fax machines, according to a new TigerConnect report.

Jessica Davis, Senior Editor at HealthIT Security links recent research from TigerConnect to the security vulnerabilities posed by older technology usage like fax and email. These technologies can expose sensitive data at endpoints –– posing a risk to patient privacy. There is a long list of breaches caused by patient records being sent to the wrong fax number, she adds.

Jessica also highlights that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has called for an end to fax machine usage in the healthcare sector by 2020.
